The gold visor is rated L4, while the green visor is rated L5, but this difference does not mean that one is always superior to the other. Both provide U6 ultraviolet protection, R5 infrared protection and high-impact resistance. However, neither model is approved for welding or for activities involving a risk of electric shock.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/aside><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Choosing a <strong>high-temperature face shield<\/strong> should not begin with the color of the visor, the appearance of the equipment or the assumption that one version looks more robust than the other.<\/p>\n<p>The starting point is an assessment of the hazards present in the activity.<\/p>\n<p>In industrial operations, the face and eyes may be exposed simultaneously to flying particles, ultraviolet radiation, infrared radiation and intense visible light. In these environments, selecting an unsuitable visor may impair task visibility, compromise correct use of the equipment and leave the worker exposed to hazards that should have been controlled.<\/p>\n<p>For this reason, the difference between the gold and green visors must be understood through the technical markings of each model and the actual conditions of the workplace.<\/p>\n<p>This article expands on one of the topics covered in the guide on <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/supremaluvas.com.br\/como-escolher-epi-para-alta-temperatura\/\">how to choose PPE for high-temperature environments<\/a><\/strong>: selecting protection for the face and eyes.<\/p>\n<h2>How should a high-temperature face shield be selected?<\/h2>\n<p>A high-temperature face shield should be selected based on the hazards identified in the activity, the optical protection markings, workplace lighting and compatibility of the complete assembly with other PPE.<\/p>\n<p>Both SUPREMA models provide protection against flying particles, U6 ultraviolet radiation, R5 infrared radiation and visible light. The main technical difference is the visible-light filter rating: L4 for the gold visor and L5 for the green visor. This difference does not mean that one model is universally superior to the other.<\/p>\n<p>Neither face shield is approved for welding, similar processes or activities involving a risk of electric shock.<\/p>\n<p>In this article, the term \u201cface shield\u201d refers specifically to the high-temperature face shield models being evaluated.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"alerta-tecnico\" aria-labelledby=\"use-limitations\">\n<h2 id=\"use-limitations\">Important use limitations<\/h2>\n<p>Brazilian CAs 43.917 and 43.918 do not approve these face shields for welding or similar processes. The equipment does not have the W marking and is also expressly restricted from use in activities involving a risk of electric shock.<\/p>\n<p>The complete assembly must only be used after a risk assessment and with the safety helmet specified in the respective Certificates of Approval, according to the current documentation.<\/p>\n<\/aside>\n<h2>What is a high-temperature face shield?<\/h2>\n<p>A high-temperature face shield is PPE designed to protect the eyes and face against specific hazards found in certain industrial operations.<\/p>\n<p>Models intended for intense visible light and non-ionizing radiation use optical filters with specific technical markings.<\/p>\n<p>SUPREMA face shields consist of:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Polycarbonate visor;<\/li>\n<li>Tilting aluminum support;<\/li>\n<li>Attachment system for the compatible safety helmet;<\/li>\n<li>Metal spring that holds the support against the helmet shell.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The visors measure approximately 240 mm in height by 360 mm in width. The gold visor is made of dark green polycarbonate with a reflective gold film on the outer surface, while the green visor is made of dark green polycarbonate.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"alerta-tecnico\" aria-labelledby=\"additional-protection\">\n<h2 id=\"additional-protection\">Additional protection may be required<\/h2>\n<p>A high-temperature face shield protects only against the hazards covered by its Certificate of Approval and does not replace the other PPE required for the activity.<\/p>\n<p>Depending on the risk assessment, aluminized garments, thermal gloves, a compatible balaclava and other protection may be required. When used simultaneously, the equipment must be compatible and maintain its respective effectiveness.<\/p>\n<\/aside>\n<h2>The first question is not \u201cgold or green?\u201d<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Before comparing the two models, the occupational health and safety professional must answer a more important question:<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Which hazards need to be controlled while this activity is being performed?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>PPE selection cannot be based solely on the commercial name of the product. Under item 6.5.2 of Brazil\u2019s <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.br\/trabalho-e-emprego\/pt-br\/acesso-a-informacao\/participacao-social\/conselhos-e-orgaos-colegiados\/comissao-tripartite-partitaria-permanente\/normas-regulamentadora\/normas-regulamentadoras-vigentes\/nr-06-atualizada-2025-ii.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NR-6 \u2013 Personal Protective Equipment<\/a><\/strong>, the organization must consider factors including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The activity being performed;<\/li>\n<li>Preventive measures related to the identified hazards and assessed occupational risks;<\/li>\n<li>The effectiveness required to control exposure;<\/li>\n<li>The requirements of regulatory standards and applicable legislation;<\/li>\n<li>Suitability and comfort for workers;<\/li>\n<li>Compatibility between PPE items used simultaneously.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Under item 6.5.2.1 of NR-6, PPE selection must be documented and may be incorporated into or referenced by the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/supremaluvas.com.br\/pgr-programa-gerenciamento-riscos\/\">Risk Management Program \u2013 PGR<\/a><\/strong>. The standard also provides for the participation of the occupational safety and health service, when applicable, after consultation with workers and the internal accident prevention committee or appointed representative.<\/p>\n<p>This means the decision between a gold and green visor should not be made solely by the Purchasing department or reduced to a price comparison.<\/p>\n<p>The product specification must be connected to the activity.<\/p>\n<h2>How do NR-6, the Brazilian CA and ANSI\/ISEA Z87.1 relate to one another?<\/h2>\n<p>In Brazil, the approval, sale, provision and use of PPE are regulated by NR-6. Under item 6.4.1, domestically manufactured or imported PPE may only be offered for sale or used when it carries a Certificate of Approval \u2013 CA issued by the Brazilian Ministry of Labor and Employment.<\/p>\n<p>The CA is not a universal certification. It qualifies a specific product configuration as PPE in Brazil and identifies the hazards for which the equipment has been approved, its restrictions, the technical standard used for its assessment and the components that must form the complete assembly.<\/p>\n<p>For CAs 43.917 and 43.918, the technical standard specified for the assessment and marking of the face shields is <a href=\"https:\/\/webstore.ansi.org\/standards\/isea\/ansiiseaz872015\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>ANSI\/ISEA Z87.1-2015<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A more recent edition of ANSI\/ISEA Z87.1 was published in 2025. However, the testing, markings and approval conditions for these face shields remain linked to the 2015 edition specified in their respective Brazilian CAs. Publication of a newer international standard does not automatically change a Brazilian Certificate of Approval.<\/p>\n<p>ANSI\/ISEA Z87.1 establishes performance, testing and marking criteria for eye and face protection equipment. NR-6 and the CA, in turn, establish the legal conditions under which the product may be sold and used as PPE in Brazil. One reference does not replace the other.<\/p>\n<h2>Which hazards are the face shields approved to protect against?<\/h2>\n<p>SUPREMA gold and green visor face shields are approved to protect the eyes and face against:<\/p>\n<h3>Impact from flying particles<\/h3>\n<p>Particles projected during an operation may strike the eyes or other areas of the face.<\/p>\n<p>The \u201c+\u201d symbol associated with Z87 indicates that the equipment meets the high-impact resistance requirement established by ANSI\/ISEA Z87.1-2015.<\/p>\n<p>This marking does not eliminate the need to assess the direction, speed, size and nature of the particles generated by the activity.<\/p>\n<h3>Ultraviolet radiation<\/h3>\n<p>The U marking identifies a filter intended to provide protection against ultraviolet radiation.<\/p>\n<p>Both SUPREMA models are rated U6.<\/p>\n<h3>Infrared radiation<\/h3>\n<p>The R marking identifies protection against infrared radiation.<\/p>\n<p>Both models are rated R5.<\/p>\n<p>Infrared radiation may be present in processes involving intense heat sources, even when the worker is not in direct contact with the source. Its presence must therefore be considered when assessing the workplace and selecting eye and face protection.<\/p>\n<h3>Intense visible light<\/h3>\n<p>The L marking indicates the visible-light filter rating.<\/p>\n<p>This is the main technical difference between the two face shields:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Gold visor: L4;<\/li>\n<li>Green visor: L5.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>L4 and L5 represent different levels of visible-light filtration. The numbers should not be interpreted as a general quality scale or as proof that one model is always safer than the other.<\/p>\n<h2>What does Z87+U6L4R5 mean?<\/h2>\n<p>The marking on the <strong>gold visor high-temperature face shield<\/strong> is:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Z87+U6L4R5<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The marking follows ANSI\/ISEA Z87.1-2015, as specified in Brazilian CA 43.918. In Brazil, its use as PPE also depends on compliance with NR-6 and the conditions stated in the Certificate of Approval.<\/p>\n<p>Each element provides different information:<\/p>\n<h3>Z87+<\/h3>\n<p>Indicates compliance with the applicable requirements of ANSI\/ISEA Z87.1-2015 and the high-impact resistance classification represented by the \u201c+\u201d symbol.<\/p>\n<h3>U6<\/h3>\n<p>Indicates the ultraviolet radiation protection rating.<\/p>\n<h3>L4<\/h3>\n<p>Identifies the visible-light filter rating.<\/p>\n<h3>R5<\/h3>\n<p>Indicates the infrared radiation protection rating.<\/p>\n<p>The configuration does not have the W marking. Therefore, the equipment is not approved for welding or similar processes.<\/p>\n<h2>What does Z87+U6L5R5 mean?<\/h2>\n<p>The marking on the <strong>green visor high-temperature face shield<\/strong> is:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Z87+U6L5R5<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The marking follows ANSI\/ISEA Z87.1-2015, as specified in Brazilian CA 43.917. However, this feature alone should not be used to assume that the equipment is suitable for every type of radiant heat exposure.<\/p>\n<p>The decision must consider:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The intensity and position of the source;<\/li>\n<li>Workplace lighting;<\/li>\n<li>The need to observe details of the operation;<\/li>\n<li>Impact hazards;<\/li>\n<li>The presence of UV and infrared radiation;<\/li>\n<li>The duration and frequency of exposure;<\/li>\n<li>Other PPE being used.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>View the features of the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/supremaluvas.com.br\/en\/product\/high-temperature-face-shield-gold-visor\/\">gold visor high-temperature face shield<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3>When should the green visor be considered?<\/h3>\n<p>The green visor should be considered when the risk assessment and visual conditions of the task are compatible with the U6L5R5 configuration.<\/p>\n<p>Because the technical difference compared with the gold visor is the visible-light filter rating, the assessment cannot disregard the worker\u2019s visual perception while performing the activity.<\/p>\n<p>A filter that is incompatible with the workplace may make it difficult to observe parts, instruments, signals, controls or process irregularities. In addition to reviewing the technical documentation, the equipment should therefore be evaluated under actual conditions of use, with input from the workers involved.<\/p>\n<p>View the features of the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/supremaluvas.com.br\/en\/product\/high-temperature-face-shield-green-visor\/\">green visor high-temperature face shield<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2>Is L5 better than L4?<\/h2>\n<p>It is not correct to state that L5 is automatically better than L4.<\/p>\n<p>The markings represent different visible-light filter ratings. They do not form a general classification in which the higher number makes one product superior for every activity.<\/p>\n<p>A visor may filter more light than the operation requires and consequently impair visibility. It may also filter less light than required for a particular lighting condition.<\/p>\n<p>Therefore, the technical question should not be:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Which visor has the higher number?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The correct question is:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Which filter rating is suitable for the workplace lighting without impairing safe visibility of the task?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The answer depends on the workplace assessment, the task and the applicable technical specifications.<\/p>\n<h2>How should you choose between the gold and green visors?<\/h2>\n<p>The selection process can be organized into six steps.<\/p>\n<h3>1. Identify the hazards of the activity<\/h3>\n<p>Assess which hazards may actually reach the eyes and face:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Flying particles;<\/li>\n<li>Ultraviolet radiation;<\/li>\n<li>Infrared radiation;<\/li>\n<li>Intense light;<\/li>\n<li>Radiant heat;<\/li>\n<li>Splashes or projected material;<\/li>\n<li>Additional hazards present in the area.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Do not assume that all these hazards are covered by the same equipment.<\/p>\n<h3>2. Assess workplace lighting<\/h3>\n<p>Observe the light source, its intensity, the direction from which it reaches the worker and any changes that occur during the task.<\/p>\n<p>It is also necessary to determine whether the worker needs to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Identify colors;<\/li>\n<li>Read instruments;<\/li>\n<li>Observe small details;<\/li>\n<li>Recognize light signals;<\/li>\n<li>Visually monitor moving materials or equipment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This information affects the selection between L4 and L5.<\/p>\n<h3>3. Check the Brazilian Certificate of Approval<\/h3>\n<p>The CA number must correspond exactly to the model being purchased.<\/p>\n<p>For the products analyzed:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Gold visor: CA <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/consultaca.com\/43918\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">43.918<\/a><\/strong>, valid until December 16, 2029;<\/li>\n<li>Green visor: CA <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/consultaca.com\/43917\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">43.917<\/a><\/strong>, valid until December 18, 2029.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Manufactured by SUPREMA \u2013 Suprema Ind\u00fastria e Com\u00e9rcio de Acess\u00f3rios do Vestu\u00e1rio Ltda., Brazilian Company Tax ID (CNPJ) 02.674.557\/0001-33 \u2013 both face shields were tested by IPT \u2013 Institute for Technological Research:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Gold visor: test report no. 1 152 693-203;<\/li>\n<li>Green visor: test report no. 1 152 694-203.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Under item 6.4.1 of NR-6, PPE may only be sold or used in Brazil when it carries a Certificate of Approval issued by the competent authority. Its current status must be checked in the <a href=\"https:\/\/caepi.trabalho.gov.br\/internet\/ConsultaCAInternet.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>official CAEPI system of the Brazilian Ministry of Labor and Employment<\/strong><\/a> before purchase.<\/p>\n<p>However, having a valid CA does not mean the equipment is suitable for every activity.<\/p>\n<p>The CA identifies the hazards for which the model has been approved, its restrictions and the configuration that must be respected. The organization remains responsible for correct selection and compliance with NR-6 and other applicable regulations.<\/p>\n<h3>4. Check the complete configuration<\/h3>\n<p>The face shield must not be used separately or assembled with components selected only because they appear similar.<\/p>\n<p>The following must be respected:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The safety helmet specified in the current documentation for CAs 43.917 and 43.918;<\/li>\n<li>The corresponding tilting support;<\/li>\n<li>The attachment system;<\/li>\n<li>The recommended assembly method;<\/li>\n<li>The manufacturer\u2019s instructions;<\/li>\n<li>Compatibility with other PPE.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Changing the configuration may compromise the performance of the assembly and invalidate the approved equipment configuration.<\/p>\n<h3>5. Evaluate use under actual workplace conditions<\/h3>\n<p>Whenever possible, conduct a controlled evaluation at the workstation.<\/p>\n<p>Observe:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Field of vision;<\/li>\n<li>Freedom of movement;<\/li>\n<li>Interference with other PPE;<\/li>\n<li>Stability of the assembly;<\/li>\n<li>Ease of adjustment;<\/li>\n<li>Ability to perceive details;<\/li>\n<li>Worker acceptance.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Item 6.5.2 of NR-6 includes suitability, comfort and consultation with workers among the factors that must be considered when selecting PPE.<\/p>\n<h3>6. Document the technical decision<\/h3>\n<p>At a minimum, the specification should record:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The activity assessed;<\/li>\n<li>Hazards identified;<\/li>\n<li>Model selected;<\/li>\n<li>CA number;<\/li>\n<li>Components of the complete assembly;<\/li>\n<li>Restrictions;<\/li>\n<li>Criteria supporting the selection;<\/li>\n<li>Instructions for use, care and replacement.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This documentation reduces decisions based on assumptions, facilitates future reviews and provides traceability for Occupational Health and Safety and Purchasing teams.<\/p>\n<h2>Can the face shield be used for welding?<\/h2>\n<p>No.<\/p>\n<p>Brazilian CAs 43.917 and 43.918 establish that <strong>the face shields are not approved for welding or similar processes<\/strong>. The product configurations do not include the W marking used by ANSI\/ISEA Z87.1 to identify welding filters.<\/p>\n<p>A reflective gold film, dark tint or infrared protection does not turn the visor into welding protection.<\/p>\n<p>For welding, equipment specifically approved for the hazards of the process must be selected, considering the type of welding, radiation intensity, required shade range and other exposures present.<\/p>\n<h2>Can it be used in activities involving a risk of electric shock?<\/h2>\n<p>No.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Certificates of Approval for both models expressly restrict their use in activities involving a risk of electric shock.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This limitation must be considered in the risk assessment, particularly because the assembly includes a tilting aluminum support and an attachment system with metal components.<\/p>\n<p>The safety helmet specified for the assembly is also not approved for electrical work. Electrical insulation must not be assumed simply because the face shield is attached to a safety helmet.<\/p>\n<h2>Does the face shield replace safety glasses?<\/h2>\n<p>The need to use safety glasses together with the face shield must be determined through the risk assessment and the requirements applicable to the activity.<\/p>\n<p>The face shield provides broad coverage, but the organization must assess:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The direction of flying particles;<\/li>\n<li>The possibility of particles entering from the sides or underneath;<\/li>\n<li>The need for primary eye protection;<\/li>\n<li>Compatibility between the equipment;<\/li>\n<li>The manufacturer\u2019s instructions;<\/li>\n<li>Operational procedure requirements.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Item 6.5.2 of NR-6 requires PPE used simultaneously to be compatible and to maintain its respective effectiveness.<\/p>\n<h2>How should the face shield be cleaned and stored?<\/h2>\n<p>Cleaning must follow the manufacturer\u2019s instructions.<\/p>\n<p>For SUPREMA models, the recommendation is to clean the equipment with a soft cloth dampened with water, without using chemicals.
